Before Summer Font: A Playful Display Typeface for Small Business Branding

As a small business owner who designs my own labels, social posts, and packaging, I’ve learned that typography isn’t just about “looking nice”—it’s about showing up consistently, clearly, and authentically across every customer touchpoint. That’s why Before Summer has become one of my go-to display fonts. It’s not overly complicated or fussy—it’s chic, fun, and quietly confident, with just enough quirk to feel human and memorable.

Before Summer is a modern display font—designed to grab attention, not blend in. Its letterforms have gentle curves, friendly proportions, and subtle personality: think rounded terminals, soft contrast, and a relaxed rhythm that feels approachable without sacrificing polish. It doesn’t try to be everything; it excels where display fonts should—as a headline, logo, or accent that adds warmth and intention to your visual voice.

I use Before Summer most often where first impressions matter: on product labels for handmade soy candles, as the hero type in Instagram story banners for my seasonal pop-up shop, and across printed menus at my neighborhood café collaboration. It works especially well for brands with a light, optimistic, or artisanal vibe—think boutiques, wellness studios, indie bakeries, or creative service providers who want their materials to feel intentional but never stiff.

Here’s how it fits into real business workflows:

Consistency builds trust—and Before Summer helps me maintain it. When customers see the same playful-yet-polished type treatment on my Etsy shop banner, candle label, and Instagram highlight cover, they subconsciously register cohesion. That signals care, professionalism, and intention—not just “I picked a pretty font.”

Before Summer isn’t meant to be used alone. Like any strong display font, it needs balance. My go-to pairings are simple and practical:

The key is contrast: let Before Summer do the expressive work, and let the secondary font handle clarity and flow. No need for three-font systems or complex hierarchies—two well-chosen typefaces are enough for 95% of small business needs.

Before committing, I always test Before Summer in context. I paste it into mockups of actual assets—like a 3×4 inch sticker, a mobile-optimized Instagram post, or a printed product hang tag—then step back and ask: Does it read instantly? Does it reflect the mood I want? Does it look equally strong on screen and paper? If the answer is yes across two or more formats, it’s ready to scale.

One thing I double-check every time: the commercial license. Before Summer is a premium font, and its license determines where and how I can use it. For example, if I’m designing a client’s t-shirt line, I confirm whether the license covers merchandise production—not just design files. Same goes for digital templates I sell on Creative Market or Canva: font embedding rights matter. Skipping this step risks legal friction down the road, so I treat licensing like a non-negotiable part of my asset checklist.

Real-world readability matters more than stylistic flair. Before Summer holds up well on mobile screens thanks to its generous spacing and clear letter shapes—but I avoid cramming it into narrow columns or tiny thumbnails. It’s strongest at 24 pt and up for headlines, and 16–20 pt for medium-weight display uses like menu headers or shop signage.

If you’re refreshing your brand identity or launching something new—a skincare line, a podcast, a weekend farmers’ market stall—consider how much personality your current type choices convey. Before Summer won’t fix inconsistent messaging or unclear positioning, but it *will* help express what’s already true about your business: your warmth, your energy, your point of view—visually, quickly, and memorably.

It’s not about chasing trends. It’s about choosing a display font that feels like an extension of your voice—not a costume. Before Summer does that without shouting. And in a world full of noise, that kind of quiet confidence is exactly what small businesses need.
